How to Save the Wax from an Old Candle

I'm so happy right now.  I'm sitting here typing away with the incredible smell of Volcano by Anthropologie...my most favorite scent EVER.  I had gotten one of those big 24oz candles and lit it pretty much every evening we were home and I just loved it so much that I almost cried when the wick burnt out.

Usually, I'm pretty good about burning candles long enough to maximize the wax, but sometimes that doesn't happen and I find a ton of wax along the sides that will be wasted.  However, after husband and I learned how to make candles last month, I realized that it's not that hard to melt wax and poor it into jars AND I had some extra wicks to use!  It took me all of 15 minutes...

How to Save the Wax from an Old Candle

1.  Place candle in boiling water making sure the water doesn't get inside the candle until wax is fully melted (this took me about 10 minutes, but it will depend on how much wax you have in your old candle).

2.  Place wick in jar with adhesive (this is important, the wick will float up if it is not adhered to the bottom).  I ran out of adhesives, so I had to improvise (aka I used tape - not pictured).  Then secure the wick so it stands straight (I used a clothes pin).

3.  Poor the melted wax from the old candle into the new candle and let harden completely.  Once hardened, cut the wick to a quarter inch above the wax.

Voila!  So easy and so fast and the process of melting the wax made my house smell amazing.  Let no wax be wasted ever again!  Plus, I can stall having to purchase those expensive candles I love so much...

  1. Very crafty! Do you combine wax from a few different candles to make one new one?
