If you have ever driven within 100 miles of Buellton, CA, you have most certainly seen one of these billboards.
For a long time, this was just a simple landmark that let me know I was almost to Cal Poly.
Andersen's: Home of the World Famous Split Pea Soup.
It was one of those things that I would say I would go there just to be able to say I went there the next time I drove by the billboard.
Last week, Bart and I were making a trip down to LA for his training classes and it happened to lie on date night. Since we basically pass through Solvang/Buellton area, we decided that this restaurant could be our date night stop.
I had to see what this split pea soup was all about.
It turns out, Bart has been to the one off of Highway 5 many times growing up and has lots of memories with his parents and sister. Apparently it was their usual stop on road trips...?
Well, I had never been there and was excited to go!
The neighboring city, Solvang, is a little Danish Village, so it was no wonder the restaurant looked like it fit right in a European town. It was so cute!
When we were seated, it wasn't long after we skimmed through the menu that we knew what we wanted to order.
All you can eat, split pea soup.
Duh.
It came with bread and a drink.
Bart and I both decided on milkshakes. I needed a little dessert before we continued the trip to LA.
We also got a little surprise at the bottom of our bowls...
I had two helpings and Bart had three. Sorry, we failed to ask our waitress what the record was.
Now, I'm sure you're dying to see if it was actually good or not, right? You are going crazy wondering if you should drop everything now and take a road trip down to Buellton, CA and order yourself some split pea soup. I can tell.
Well, it was good. I mean, maybe I just don't see the big deal about split pea soup in order to hop in my car and make the drive there just for the soup, but it was good...and that's about it.
If you happen to be driving through the area, definitely, you should make the stop and try it just to say you did. I mean, it is world famous after all...
Happy Date Night!
