Blogtober 2014 {Worst Vacation: That One Time Mickey Let Us Down}

I'm going to say something that totally goes against my beliefs:

One time, I had a terrible trip to Disneyland.

Like, it was the worst vacation I can think of.

Husband and I had only been dating for about 6 months and we hadn't figured out a lot of things...such as, how to celebrate birthdays.  His family doesn't really celebrate well.  I didn't grow up in a family that glorified birthdays, but it was at least acknowledged and we were definitely celebrated (to their defense - they've gotten so much better!).  So, when my first birthday with my new boyfriend was coming, I was really excited to see what he would do.  He is such a romantic, and I already knew this about him, so I was sure he had some surprises up his sleeve.  He's incredibly thoughtful and loved surprising me, so I thought for sure he would do something extra special for my birthday.

Well, as it turns out, he was really good at surprises and thoughtful gifts when it was on his own terms.  He loved the "just because" gifts and thoughtfulness, but when it came to birthdays, there wasn't much of a difference in that day than any other.

BUT, since this was the year Disneyland let you in for free on your birthday, we decided to go with one of our friends who shares my birthday with me and make it a family affair.  I planned and organized the whole thing, but for some reason...he thought he was taking me to Disneyland for my birthday...as in, that he was planning this big thing for me...

Prior to my birthday, though, he said he was really excited because he was going to make me a gift and he had the perfect thing in mind.  Anticipating is always fun, so I think he really wanted me to look forward to it...so I did.

Honestly, I can't even remember the exact details on why this trip was so bad, but I do remember that the entire drive down consisted of us getting in our first fight.  It ended up being an entire episode of miscommunication and unmet expectations.  The reason we look so tired in all of the pictures is because we both cried up until seeing our friends and his family at the gate, and then we put on fake smiles for the majority of the trip.

He never got around to making me my gift, and said it would have to come at a later date since he was so busy (I'm still waiting for that gift, babe!).

For a long time, this trip was a really sore subject.  We have yet to return to Disneyland together, which, we really need to because we both love that place.

Since then, husband has really made me feel special and loved on my birthday and we look back on this day and laugh (sort of...too soon?).

Mickey let us down back in 2009 and it wasn't the happiest place on earth (blasphemy, I know!).  But, I still believe in the magic of that place - don't you worry, friends!  I just had one bad experience...
