One of my favorite things in the entire world: fresh berries. Blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, I love them all. Not only are they stinkin' delicious, but they are also high in antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals.
I grew up picking blackberries. We had bushes all over our yard and my mom would make jam. She'd make the jam out of whatever blackberries didn't make it all over my siblings and my faces.
Now that I don't have blackberries (or any kind of berries) growing all over my yard, I have to bear the pain of buying these delicious, yet very expensive treats. Berries always seem so expensive that when I finally get myself to purchase them, I try to savor them with every bite.
Fresh and Easy has this beautiful gem called the discount rack where I like to frequent. Sometimes, when there's a solar eclipse, they'll have berries. The other day my husband brought home two large containers of raspberries and two small containers of blackberries. I think the total amount he paid was $3.50. Hallelujah!
The only problem with this was that since they were on the discount rack, that means the sale date was that day. This doesn't make them bad, but this does mean that they will not last for much longer. It is a huge tragedy in our house when berries begin growing little white fuzzies because we didn't eat them fast enough. Seriously, we might as well host a funeral for them. But the good Lord knows we have such issues here on earth so in response, he created Pinterest to help. Awhile ago I found this little tip and finally put it into practice...
How to keep berries fresh for longer:
What you'll need:
10 parts water
1 part vinegar (apple cider or white)
1. Combine the water and vinegar in a bowl.
2. Add the berries and let them soak for a few minutes.
3. Drain.
4. Rinse.
The vinegar will kill any beginnings of mold that began growing on the berries and will help keep them fresh for sometimes a week longer.
And I know you're going to ask, so I'll just tell you. The vinegar is so diluted by the water that it doesn't make your berries taste funny or different. Don't you worry!
So enjoy your berries. Savor them. And don't be afraid to buy them when they're on the discount rack.

ReplyDeleteI love this trick! My mom does it all the time (and of course, now I do too). So simple, yet works wonders!
